DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: The Accounting Department provides many services to our multi hospital and health care services organization including maintaining accurate and timely financial records for the System the Hospital Foundation and several Joint Ventures. The department facilitates an annual financial statement audit. The Department prepares and submits external financial reporting including but not limited to tax returns and cost reports. The Department is also responsible for internal reporting to support senior leadership in the decision making process through the appropriate presentation of financial data. Not responsible for patient billing collecting account management or charity care assessments.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Senior Accountant provides accounting services to St. Charles Health System customers. This position provides excellent customer service to all hospital clinic staff and visitors in person and via telephone and is committed to professionalism excellence and quality performance. The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing and maintaining accurate and timely financial statements for the organization. They will demonstrate a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles GAAP know the full accounting cycle and compile all financial statements including balance sheet income statement cash flow and statement of net assets. Performs balance sheet and income statement analysis and investigates historical and forecasted variances. The Senior Accountant performs the necessary duties for maintaining the general ledger and providing internal and external support for audit and regulatory reporting in coordination with other Accounting caregivers. They exhibit professionalism integrity and maintain the highest degree of confidentiality of sensitive information. This position does not directly manage any other caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Maintains the books and records of the consolidated health system financials and other consolidated entities. Including reviewing interface transactions completing and reviewing manual journal entries and preparing and reviewing other transactions to ensure accurate financial records. Maintains and balances an automated general ledger system by inputting data scheduling required jobs and verifying data.
Prepares and reviews journal entries and reconciliations of all complexities including the highest most technical areas.
Researches technical accounting literature involving unique and material transactions within the health system to ensure compliance with GAAP. Prepares thorough yet concise documentation to support research position and conclusion.
Mentors others on the Accounting team providing constructive coaching value add work product review and shares technical expertise in a productive manner.
Researches and analyzes accounts and transactions.
General ledger processing and account reconciliations.
Bank and investment account reconciliations.
Prepares joint venture and related entity financial statements as appropriate.
Supports external audits including preparation of reperformable working papers for documentation and auditor s review.
Supports regulatory and external reporting including federal and state tax returns.
Assists in coordinating team communication and ad hoc reporting to management and external entities.
Supports management with ad hoc projects and complex analyses as needed.
Assists Accounting Supervisor in continually improving processes including but not limited to month end close standard reporting and reconciliations.
Creates detailed process documentation ensuring accounting implications of processes are clearly understood.
Delivers customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill is timely efficient and accurate. Answers accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.

Required: Six 6 years of accounting experience in a role of similar complexity.
Preferred: Three 3 to five 5 years of public accounting experience and or healthcare accounting experience. Tax preparation experience including IRS Form 990.
